At an age when most boys are busy climbing trees, catching frogs, or tossing a baseball with their dad in the backyard, Tom Sullivan was helping his father embalm dead bodies.

So goes the life of the son of a third-generation funeral director.

Today, as a fifty-something father himself, Sullivan shares how he was cautious about letting his own children even attend funerals, wary of the effects it might have had on them—effects that he himself has felt for so many years. But while he regrets being given a front-row-seat look at death so young, he doesn’t fault his father. Death was just a matter-of-fact occurrence in the Sullivan household—and the means by which food was put on the dinner table.

Sullivan recalls some of the more gruesome, disturbing, and spectacular deaths he witnessed—100 mph car accidents, an infamous five-person murder, a skydiver whose parachute failed to deploy—as well as the more mundane, “garden-variety” deaths. Though he admits to being deeply scarred by his childhood exposure to death, he maintains a healthy sense of humor. Most importantly, he has developed a deep, unique perspective on the frailty of human life.

Switching Heads eBook Tom Sullivan

Mr. Sullivan seems to have written this book to exorcise some demons; hopefully it helped him. From the reader's perspective , it's a bit uneven, often repeating itself almost word for word. The layout is a bit strange for an ebook too - chapter titles in the middle of pages wherever they fell.

Overall, if you are a fan of this type of book, you won't be sorry you bought it. On the other hand if you decide to skip it you probably will never notice.

Switching Heads eBook Tom Sullivan Reviews

This book was so-so. It reads more like a blog and jumps around a bit from one idea back to an earlier one. There are also loads of typo's throughout the book. Most interesting is The List Murders chapter. The author describes the overall List scene well enough, but totally misses the mark on scene detail. One of his claims was outrageous.. "the mothers hands duct taped behind her back" is completely unfounded and not even evident in scene photos. I would suggest a better editor and more careful research.
I had a hard time reading this book because there was no "flow" to it. It jumped around all over the place and repeated a lot of things. While some of the stories were interesting, they weren't written well enough to fully capture my attention. Honestly, it was frustrating to try and follow the book.
Despite this is very graphic about death it is real. This book was good reading material but too short. I was disappointed that the book had very few pages compared to other books.
I see a lot of reviewers got on this book for a few spelling and grammar mistakes, but that is like tossing out a Ferrari for having a few nicks in the paint job. This book is simply profound, especially if you are familiar with the towns that these deaths occurred in. I only wish the book could be longer! There is something sweetly attractive about reading about death, but sickening in its after taste. Death is something that we all should be in touch with from time to time, and this book is a great exploration into the various ways that we can depart this flesh. This book is mesmerizing and is a quick read.
Although this was simply meant to be a cathartic project for the author, I expected it to have been a better rendering of his experiences. It was quite disjointed and repetitive. I would suggest this book only as a general viewpoint of a child being brought into the mortuary business, and the damage it mentally incurred.
This book starts out a little difficult to read due to the repetitions, but as you get into it, it becomes totally engrossing! Getting past the fact that a young boy had to go through these disturbing experiences, you find yourself wanting to read more and more!! I found myself thinking that this would make such a great movie! I would love to read the sequel!!

As a resident of northern NJ I purchased the book as a local interest item.
I find the story interesting and informative in regard to the funeral industry.
What I find distracting are the misspellings, awkward sentence structure and several uses of the wrong word; such as "bazaar" for "bizarre".
I assume that this is a self-published piece as there is no editor listed.
It is always necessary to have someone else look over ANY writer's work as the writer usually cannot see his owm mistakes.
All in all a good story!
