'The most explosive book about soccer violence ever!' (Sunday Sport)
'Compulsive reading ... riveting stuff' (Inside Sport)
`As an insight into the mind of a hooligan, it probably won't be bettered.' (Manchester Evening News)
'A gripping read.' (BBC Radio Five Live)
For fifteen years, Mickey Francis and his brothers led a succession of violent gangs following one of Britain's biggest clubs, Manchester City. They fought scores of pitched battles with rival 'firms' until their bloody reign was brought to an end by the police Omega Squad in the most successful undercover operation of its kind.
Subsequently banned from every soccer ground in the country, Francis became the first of the hooligan 'top boys' to break silence. His story became an instant best-seller and is now a terrace classic.
Guvnors tells it like it was in the heyday of the hooligan culture.

My wife was shocked when I told her it's one of the strangest books I've read. Her comment was, "It must be really weird!" All the violence in the book seems to be just for fun. It reads as a catalog of brawls. I can't say it's bad, but the banality of it wears on you. There isn't much insight into the 'hooligan' culture, other than they just enjoyed beating the living hell out of each other.Product details

Guvnors The Autobiography of a Football Hooligan Gang Leader eBook Mickey Francis Peter Walsh Reviews
One of the best books of the football battles. Good true life accounts of how life really was, and still is at some grounds. The story tells about true life incidents which really happened. If you like to read books about true violence then this is definitely one to read.
As far as 'hoolifan' books go this is one of the better books that are out there on offer (As far as I know it is now published by Milo books so don't know why it is out of print in the States) Written by Francis one of the former Manchester City fans who ran with a firm who were at times known as the 'Cool Cats' then the 'Guv'nors'
Francis was a mixed race lad (His mother white, from Liverpool ironically what with him being a City fan and all and his father West Indian) and the family grew up in the mixed race Moss Side district of Manchester (Where Cities ground originally was) Oddly enough Man City also attracted a fair amount of National Front supporters and Francis points out that his was not the only firm that was associated with City and that the racist National Front firms also did their fair amount of damage.
Francis recounts his early childhood (Something which becomes manotinous in these hoolifan books, working class lad, dad knocked me about, mum salt of the earth yawn......) How he and his brothers became involved with City and eventually the Hooligan firm that became notorious.
Francis doesn't give us any superman stories of "5 of us 20 of them and we stood our ground and knocked sh*** out of them" Nor does he paint a rosy picture of hooliganism in the 70s and 80s recounting how much of their time was spent robbing from shops both in their native Manchester and other cities they visited. For the most part the Guvnors are portrayed as more of a group of lads who followed City and were up for a fight with whoever they came across, sometimes winning sometimes losing and for the most part, looking for fights.
Francis goes out to give us the usual account of court cases and jail time he served and how he went on to work the doors in some of the roughest night clubs in the City of Manchester.
What I suppose makes this book stand out from the hundreds of other hoolifan books is that Francis is pretty honest. When he gets his head kicked in he gets his head kicked in, when he has to run he runs (As he mentions running from Spurs once) He mentions many occasions when on not finding rival firms they ran at and beat up ordinary fans (For example Manchester United and Arsenal fans) this was not something exclusive to City, all hooligan firms did this don't let them kid you with the rose tinted sanitised versions of football hooliganism that is getting peddled these days.
Francis was no saint, and this book in many parts will disgust (as it should) any ordinary football fan. Don't let anyone kid you that hooliganism no longer exists it does, Francis is fairly honest with what he says and if you want to read an account of football hooliganism in England during the 70s and 80s then this is a book to buy.
