THE CAT LADY This is a portrait of an old woman who loves her felines described in loving and brutal detail, outlining the descent of her mental illness and estrangement from the outside world. Only her cats can alert her to the presence of the aliens she believes are stalking her. Her anxieties and pathologies remain unchecked by family members and friends who in their denial and exasperation abandon her to an unexpected fate. Amber's latest book puts her in yet another genre altogether; she has pierced the short story world, and places herself right up there with some of the best and scariest story tellers. I can see these becoming a film series one day. She not only literally shocks the reader in a breathless balancing act of walking that fine line between fact and fiction, but juxtaposes this against a backdrop of hardcore "un-talked-about-grossness." She takes the reader into dangerous waters, entering forbiden subjects -- 5 scary-as-hell stories. Somehow, she throws us a life-line at the end. Amber's professional experience as a funeral director, and autopsy assistant inserts a cold hard reality stab of forensic science into messy flesh and tainted minds. It makes one wonder...what is real, what is exaggerated fantasy, and what is completely made up? Great reading, but like waking from a nightmare, we are glad that what we dreamed wasn't real, and that we wake up to a different reality. Makes one wonder again, however, which parts are real, or which are not? Shudder... There are no bogie-men or monsters per say, just real people doing weird things in bizarre situations. Now that's scary!

The Distribution of Fluids Amber Lenore Winckler 9780984273621 Books Reviews

These stories are not easy to read; they do not have happy endings and they will not give you a warm fuzzy feeling (well ... I suppose they could give some people a warm fuzzy feeling, if this type of subject matter is inclined to inspire such a feeling ...). If you happen to be a fan of Joyce Carol Oates' or Patricia Highsmith's short stories, you will most likely like Amber Lenore Winckler's stories because of the different types of grotesqueries she lays forth in each story. My only complaint is that there weren't more stories in this collection.

As for the stories themselves they are all different and give the reader a refreshing new voice with each story. "The Distribution of Fluids" uses a cold, clinical, angry tone as Clara does her professional best with a body who deserves the unprofessional worst while remembering what her mother had told her about the abuses this woman inflicted upon her (the mother) and her siblings. "The Cat Lady" has a paranoid, dirty feel to it as the old woman sinks deeper and deeper into her mental illness (I personally wasn't too fond of the alien bit, but I felt A. L. W. wrote about this mental illness very well - in a not-over-the-top, factual manner). "The Blood (la sangre)" reads like the worst possible outcome for childhood trauma; Jessie inflicts depravities (usually consentual but often times coerced) upon younger men in a way to come to terms with what many would call an unusual addiction. This addiction was inspired by the childhood trauma and would eventually lead to his greatest griefs. I loved "Waste of Skin" ... I found it to be suspenseful and gripping because I had no clue what was going on and I couldn't wait to find out (I at first thought it was going to be "Saw" like in nature, and got a giggle when one of the trapped characters thought the same thing. It's nothing like any of the "Saw" movies). I can't write anymore without giving something away. "Fat" was difficult to read because it mostly colloquially written, but the premise was very interesting and disturbing.

I wouldn't call these horror stories, but I wouldn't recommend them to anyone who was squeamish. I hope Amber Lenore Winckler has another collection in the works ... hopefully she won't have as much trouble finding a publisher for the next one. If this happens to be your first A. L. W. experience, don't forget about her novels - The Final Bath and Into the Hands of Strangers -)
After reading The Final Bath, I was eager to read more from Ms. Winkler. I must say I was disappointed at what seems to be her attempt at fiction. The dialogue was at times annoying, especially when she was emphasizing a stutter of one of her characters.
If you read The Final Bath and are expecting more of the same, this is not it.
I've read all her books. I wish she were more popular because I think she has a very refreshing writing style. Her subject matter has always interested me; I read lots of books on the funeral service industry. I'm also a fan of short stories so this book was a no-brainer buy. I was not disappointed.
I continue to be fascinated and impressed at the level of creativity that pours from Amber Winckler's pen. WOW -- I thought her first two books were great but I definitely feel her slip into a place of expertise with these short stories - as if this were a passion.

The stories were haunting, unsettling....somewhat disgusting -- but they all brought about a visceral reaction not to be ignored. As with her first two books, I could not put it down till read. The writing flows and pulls you in as you think "just one more page"!
Once you begin reading this book you won't be able to put it down! This compilation of short stories by Amber Winckler is like reading a Twilight Zone episode with a Stephen King twist. Each of these stories, in their own unique way, delve into the darker and much more fragile side of the human mind. "The Distribution of Fluids" and "Wasted Skin" are my two favorite stories from the collection. They are both disturbing and fascinating at the same time. I liken these stories to watching a lion in pursuit of a young zebra on the Discovery Channel. You want to look away, but you have to see what happens next. That same morbid curiosity makes this book such an interesting page turner. Amber Winckler has a true talent and is able to tap into places few writers can go with such depth and perception. I can't wait for her next book.
Perhaps it could be titled, "A Girl Named Nothing Who became Something!"
This is the third of Amber's works that I have read. It is probably the one that I finished in the least amount of time, as a collection of compelling short stories is very hard to put down.

They are not for the weak of spirit, and jump feet first into the line of work that some of us have chosen and many others find unnatural. By choice or not, all much touch or be touched by death some day.

Amber's personal knowledge makes her stories all the more real.

Bravo!
This lady never lets you down this time the ultimate ending for a horrible grandmother because you get to embalm her, Renge is mine saith the embalmer.
